Cream shortening and sugar together. Add beaten egg and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder, salt,
nutmeg and cloves together. Add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Form into a roll 1 1/2 inches in
diameter. Wrap in waxed paper. Chill thoroughly. Cut in 1/8-inch slices. Place on greased baking
sheet and bake in moderate oven (350° F.) 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly
browned.
Yield: 4 dozen cookies.
