January 2007 Gathering of the Mistress of Spices at the Spice House, Village of Wauatosa, where our young visitor from Argentina, Paul, is inducted to be an honorary memeber of this select group of intelligent, beautiful young ladies, whose headquarters is a small secret island off the coast of India. ( all ladies, mind you. )  Left to right:  Ruth, Carly, Caity, Paula.
This is all fanciful metaphor, of course, as is the lovely rich book, see below, Mistresses of Spices. But true in the best sense.

.
Two fold purpose.  One.  To start the making; writing; of the Spice House manual,
based on two approaches.  The ISO Standards and their western science methodology which involves specific nearly mathematical use of precise language
for purposes of tight implimentation of quality control standards.
Then  the old spice culture methods of both the ancient Chinese I Ching
method, and the Hindu Kush " enneagram " method, both methods of which
get into purpose; meaning; more abstract reasons for knowing what one is doing.
.
Second purpose.  To make known three young lady Spice apprentices from
which one will be selected one year from now on Julia Child's birthday Aug. 16
to become an accepted member of the " Mistresses of Spices study group ".

tThree of the first " mistresses of spices " chopping vanilla beans with Ruth
up at the white house in the dining room.  Corrina, Middy ( Miriam ), and Jenni.  Photo from about the year 2000.
At this time ( Nov. 2006 ), Corrina is working in a famous deli in NYC ( they supply the United Nations
with many pastries ) while teaching private
violin lessons.  Professor Jean Barr, a long time spice house customer, helped a little in getting a full
four year music scholarship for Corrina to the Eastman School of Music  She graduated a couple of years ago.
Midi is back in Mexico, we think,  with her well know Father artist ( her Mom was from Wauwatosa, Geralayne Circle ),
Her family in southern Mexico were actually " sufi " and followers of Indries Shah the sufi writer' there is a group in their town there in south Mexilco.  Midi loved " date cakes " and we should put her recipe on the web pages here.
Midi graduated from Lawrence College here in Wauwatosa.  Jenni just is back from a year in China and is " in between " in her life.  And Jenni is our " assistant manager " for this period before   she returns to UW for more music learning.
